A personal history of Stanage Edge
As a young boy I was regularly taken climbing by my father and uncles and, as the crux of a climb was overcome and easier holds reached the words would often drift down "it’s like a letter from home youth". Both of my uncles had served in the forces and it took me a long time to equate the comfort of good holds with a reassuring letter from home in wartime.
In this, my first collection, I try to tell the story of a place that became home from home for my uncles and myself, an old familiar friend to countless generations of climbers, Stanage Edge.
Where appropriate I also incorporate the history of the crag...a history of extraordinary pioneers and a changing but changeless escarpment.
