Collection: Pioneers

This series of paintings is based on photographs from the early climbing guide books, particularly the Stanage Area guide of 1963 and the Froggatt Area guide of 1965.

Some of the climbers featured were family, most were friends and mentors but all were major figures in the climbing world at that time.  The legacy of these pioneers is intrinsically bound up with the rock they climbed and, whilst they are all gone now, they will always be part of the crags they loved.
